Meta‐analysis using individual participant data: one‐stage and two‐stage approaches, and why they may differ
نویسندگان
چکیده
Meta-analysis using individual participant data (IPD) obtains and synthesises the raw, participant-level data from a set of relevant studies. The IPD approach is becoming an increasingly popular tool as an alternative to traditional aggregate data meta-analysis, especially as it avoids reliance on published results and provides an opportunity to investigate individual-level interactions, such as treatment-effect modifiers. There are two statistical approaches for conducting an IPD meta-analysis: one-stage and two-stage. The one-stage approach analyses the IPD from all studies simultaneously, for example, in a hierarchical regression model with random effects. The two-stage approach derives aggregate data (such as effect estimates) in each study separately and then combines these in a traditional meta-analysis model. There have been numerous comparisons of the one-stage and two-stage approaches via theoretical consideration, simulation and empirical examples, yet there remains confusion regarding when each approach should be adopted, and indeed why they may differ. In this tutorial paper, we outline the key statistical methods for one-stage and two-stage IPD meta-analyses, and provide 10 key reasons why they may produce different summary results. We explain that most differences arise because of different modelling assumptions, rather than the choice of one-stage or two-stage itself. We illustrate the concepts with recently published IPD meta-analyses, summarise key statistical software and provide recommendations for future IPD meta-analyses. © 2016 The Authors. Statistical Analysis of Individual Participant Data Meta-Analyses: A Comparison of Methods and Recommendations for Practice
BACKGROUND Individual participant data (IPD) meta-analyses that obtain "raw" data from studies rather than summary data typically adopt a "two-stage" approach to analysis whereby IPD within trials generate summary measures, which are combined using standard meta-analytical methods. Recently, a range of "one-stage" approaches which combine all individual participant data in a single meta-analysi...
متن کاملIndividual Participant Data Meta-Analysis for a Binary Outcome: One-Stage or Two-Stage?
BACKGROUND A fundamental aspect of epidemiological studies concerns the estimation of factor-outcome associations to identify risk factors, prognostic factors and potential causal factors. Because reliable estimates for these associations are important, there is a growing interest in methods for combining the results from multiple studies in individual participant data meta-analyses (IPD-MA). W...
متن کاملQuantifying heterogeneity in individual participant data meta-analysis with binary outcomes
BACKGROUND In meta-analyses (MA), effect estimates that are pooled together will often be heterogeneous. Determining how substantial heterogeneity is is an important aspect of MA. METHOD We consider how best to quantify heterogeneity in the context of individual participant data meta-analysis (IPD-MA) of binary data. Both two- and one-stage approaches are evaluated via simulation study. We co...
متن کاملStatistical Harmonization Methods in Individual Participants Data Meta-Analysis are Highly Needed
Meta-analysis can roughly be divided into aggregate data (AD) meta-analysis and individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis. AD meta-analysis is the traditional form of meta-analysis and fully focuses on pooling effect sizes that are formulated at the study level, i.e. this analysis represents an analysis of analyses [6]. AD meta-analysis typically combines reported summary statistics from ...

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of compassion-focused therapy on Depression and Rumination after a romantic breakup. The present study was carried out using the single-case quasi-experimental method and a simple baseline method. For this purpose, three female participants were selected through targeted sampling and they were treated through an individual Compass...
